French novelist Jerome Ferrari said that his new novel, “Where I Left My Soul,” draws its events from the Battle of Algiers, and takes from it a fictional space. Ferrari added, “What interested me in this novel was looking at how a person finds himself in a position that allows him to torture others.”

The novel presents French military figures who were tortured during World War II by the Nazis, but allowed themselves to carry out the same inhumane practices on the Algerian fedayeen.
