The second part of the famous Naguib Mahfouz trilogy, considered by many critics and literature specialists to be the best and most important Arabic novel. This part deals with the next phase of the 1919 revolution in the life of Sayyid Ahmed Abd al-Gawad’s family, where Sayyed was isolated for five years after the martyrdom of his son, “Fahmy,” until he finally decided to get out of his isolation and go back to staying up late at the house of “Zubaydah,” the scholar, and there he was surprised by “Zanuba.” She has become a mature girl, so he falls in love with her and buys her a raft overlooking the Nile. At the same time, his eldest son, Yassin, loves her and enters his father's world through his back door, while Kamal lives a platonic love story for his beloved Aida. The novel was published in 1957 and screened in 1967.
