“Ahmed Murad” will kidnap you in a time machine, to bring you down in an era in which Cairo is boiling with events and a period of time into an intertwined world in which the author ably holds all his keys, between “Saad Zaghloul” and the intransigence of the British, the story of “The Delegation” and the “Matatea” café, a secret group operating under the café “ Feathers,” and the worlds of legalized prostitution, many characters you’ll sympathize with or loathe, or do both without reservation, with dialogue so lively you’ll almost hear it ringing in your ear, and painstakingly accurate historical details that you’ll realize some still insist on seriousness and mastery.
