Dostoevsky was arrested in 1849 for frequenting literary circles against the regime of Tsar Nicholas I. When he miraculously escaped the death penalty, he was exiled to a Siberian prison, where he spent four years of hard labour. And from this personal experience, this novel, which tells - in the form of notes - about life in the prison, the prevailing regime, the cruelty of the executioners, hunger, and hard work... In it, horror and injustice are accurately portrayed, and many different facts are narrated in it in detail and in an impressive human way. In addition to its historical interest and self-characterization, this work represents a turning point in Dostoevsky's literary life, as this writer was inspired by the prisoners with whom he lived at the time, many of the characters of his next creative masterpieces. And about these years that he spent in the concentration camps, Dostoevsky writes in one of his correspondence: "My time was not wasted, if I could know the Russian people a good knowledge, which may only come to a few people." It is an anthem to life above all, these notes from home The Dead paved the way for all subsequent concentration camp literature. It is more than a novel, these notes are among the most beautiful and true investigations.
