The events of this "burning secret" take place between a seductive and manipulative man, a hesitant mother, and a child who is still innocent but distinguished by remarkable maturity. Their feelings intertwine in a delicate and harmonious manner, then collide and flare up until it becomes difficult to control them. A bachelor baron lands in a hotel in the Austrian Alps and chooses a prestigious woman accompanied by her twelve-year-old son as his prey. In order to skillfully and quickly reach his goal, and get close to the beautiful lady, he resorts to linking an opportunistic relationship with the child. However, the seducer, after going through the stage of getting close to the mother, sought to distance her son, who soon became an obstacle in front of him, which would cause the child, who felt that his new "friend" had deceived him, to resort to all means to obstruct the attempts of rapprochement between the man and the woman. Tension, suspense, fast rhythm, and short chapters make this novel a wonderful reading moment, and once again demonstrate the inimitable talent that Zweig has in probing the depths of the human soul. It is another ornament created by a superior jeweler.
