One night, a traveler meets in a tavern a man who was once proud and authoritarian, but today he is submissive and broken, and tells him the story of his love, which was lost because of him, because he did not know how to protect his wife, whom he had long neglected and humiliated.
These two stories, published in 1922, embody the art of Stefan Zweig and his ability to express the suffering of one-sided love, and the passion that burns hearts and loses minds. They also confirm once again Zweig's talent in describing the psychology of his characters and his masterful control of the narrative.
