Despite its humor, the story "Another Man's Wife and Husband Under the Bed" is an important stage in Dostoevsky's career, because it reveals his special sense of humor, which is broadcast in all his works, even the most tragic of them.
Followed by "A Novel in Nine Letters", which is a masterpiece of correspondence literature, in which two friends, Pyotr Ivanovich and Ivan Petrovich, exchange letters that little by little depict the nature of the relationship that binds them. The two friends begin their correspondence with a polite and friendly tone, which gradually cools down to end in vile behavior, statements, and mutual accusations of marital infidelity.
Dostoevsky wrote these two stories in his youth, before his arrest and sending him to a hard labor prison in Siberia in 1849, and they undoubtedly set the stage for the brilliant future work of this great novelist and incomparable expert on the human soul.
